National Theatre

The National Theatre opened in November 1966, during the 41st year of the Showa era. As a hub for traditional Japanese performing arts, the theatre showcases performances such as Kabuki, Bunraku, and Japanese dance. However, it will close for renovations at the end of October 2023. During closure, performances will be held at alternative venues.

Upcoming events and performances (mainly introductory for international guests) at the National Theatre until October:

The Last National Theatre Open House in September and October
 Discover the charm of the original National Theatre as a grand facility in a guided stage tour in English before its reconstruction.

From November, they will take place at alternative venues due to reconstruction:

Discover BUNRAKU (December 8, 2023)
 Bunraku performance with Japanese and English commentary
・Hogaku Performance (January 27, 2024)
 Enjoy a creatively arranged performance of traditional Japanese music, known as Hogaku.
・Bunraku Introductory Performance (March 23 to 29, 2024)
 Delight in Bunraku, one of Japan's traditional performing arts, presented in a concise format.
・Introductory Dance Performance (March 24, 2024)
 An introductory Japanese dance performance with commentary.
