Special Exhibition Commemorating the 55th Anniversary of the Yamatane Museum of Art: A Profusion of Flowers―The Splendid Floral World

In 2021, the Yamatane Museum of Art, which opened in 1966 as Japan’s first museum specializing in Nihonga, celebrates its fifty-fifth anniversary. As we commemorate this milestone, our museum will be in full bloom, adorned by the glorious paintings of flowers in our A Profusion of Flowers special exhibition.     This exhibition focuses on modern and contemporary Nihonga in bloom. It displays, in one glorious arrangement, masterly paintings of flowers that give a sense of the four seasons: Yokoyama Taikan’s cherry blossoms, Yamaguchi Hōshun’s hydrangeas, Kobayashi Kokei’s lotus blossoms, and Hayami Gyoshū’s camellias, plus many others. This opportunity to consider how these esteemed artists viewed flowers and to examine their brilliantly creative styles. We hope that you will find this profusion of flowers inspiring and that you will enjoy savoring the fascinating paintings of flowers that Japanese artists continue to create.
