Must-See Art and Cultural Hotspots in Japan

Art Festivals & Events

"Yamaguchi’s Ouchi culture that nurtured artist-monk Sesshu" Cultural activities and promotion events parallel to the Yamaguchi Yume Kairo Expo

On the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Sesshu's birth, we want to convey the world the history, culture and nature of the city of Yamaguchi through the updating and showcasing of two new media artworks that explore the concepts of nature and the environment: “Water State 1” and “Forest Symphony”, created in 2013 by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani in cooperation with the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM). Furthermore, in an aim to convey both the wonders of “Ouchi culture” that enabled Sesshu to thrive as an artist, and the evolution process of art and culture in Japan since Sesshu’s era and throughout the ages, we will launch various initiatives aimed at creating new value for the city, such as art events revolving around traditional Japanese culture. These will feature works by local artists, and will be held within the city’s designated “Ouchi cultural heritage district”, a crossroads between Yamaguchi’s golden era under the Ouchi clan during the Muromachi period, and the historical events that marked the end of the Edo period in Japan.
