Special Exhibition :Takeuchi Seihō’s Tabby Cat and Animal’s Paradise
Takeuchi Seihō (1864-1942), a Nihonga artist who was a powerful force in the modern art world in Kyoto, depicted an abundance of animals throughout his life. His superb talent as a draughtsman made his paintings of animals highly renowned. Designated an Important Cultural Property, his Tabby Cat, painted in 1924, made him famous as a master of animal painting in the world of modern Nihonga. This special exhibition will include not only Tabby Cat, being shown for the first time in four years, but also sixteen other paintings of animals by Seihō. It will also include paintings by Seihō‘s students Nishimura Goun, Nishiyama Suishō, and Hashimoto Kansetsu, as well as Uemura Shōkō and Takeuchi Kōichi, all known for their own paintings of animals. To these works by Seihō and other Kyoto artists, this exhibition adds superb and distinctive animal paintings by famous Tokyo-based artists Kobayashi Kokei and Okumura Togyū.
