NIJL Arts Initiative: Classical Japan in Trans-creation
If such a thing as “Japanese beauty” exists, its most fulsome incarnation is the premodern textual heritage of the Japanese people. The goal of this project is the creative re-incarnation of this heritage by modern artists through novels, through animation and the theatre, through painting and other plastic arts both traditional and contemporary in style, through representations in translation, diorama, and image, through works, or through series of works, in any number of different media. In interactive exhibitions making use of the newest technology, as well as interpersonal talk events with the artists themselves, we hope to communicate the unexhausted richness of these premodern textual resources, their continued ability to inspire such trans-creation, bringing to life across such spans of time new works of a cultural and artistic vitality undiminished in the present age.
