Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art Inaugural Exhibition: Hiroshi Sugimoto – Post Vitam
Since the 1970s, Sugimoto Hiroshi has earned global acclaim for his masterful use of large cameras to produce stunning photographs. Sugimoto's interests encompass everything from collecting art to historical documents from different times and places, architecture, and theatrical direction. These activities are all facets of his ongoing exploration of the concept of time, human perception, and the origins of consciousness. Now, to celebrate the reopening of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, Sugimoto will invoke the sacred splendor of an imaginary temple under the title Post Vitam, paying homage to the museum's location in Okazaki, Kyoto, once home to six major temples. Featuring a wide range of glass art and artifacts, the exhibition will mark the world premiere of Sugimoto's color photography series Opticks. In a Japan first, his glass tea house Mondrian will also be displayed in the Museum's Japanese garden, having previously graced exhibitions as far away as Venice and Versailles.
