Japanese Cherry BlossomsIllustrated by Ohta Yoai, a Pioneer of the Botanical Art in Japan

This exhibition will display about 100 precious watercolor paintings of cherry blossoms painted by the pioneer of Japanese botanical art, Ohta Yoai (1910-1988), the herbarium specimens of the cherry blossoms used as the drawing material, and other related documents. Many of the botanical arts on display are the originals of the publication, "Nihon Sakurashu(Flowering Cherries of Japan)" (1973) which was co-authored by Dr. Ohi Jisaburo, and which can be said to be the culmination of cherry blossoms studies in Japan. Through this exhibition, we will reassess Ohta's and Ohi's achievements in cherry blossom's natural history research.
