Five Ukiyo-e Favorites Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kuniyoshi
Following a successful first ukiyo-e exhibition in 2014, this second installment will showcase colored nishiki-e woodblock prints, featuring masterpieces from five greats of the genre: Kitagawa Utamaro, Toshusai Sharaku, Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Showcasing leading pieces from the collections of Western museums, galleries, and private individuals, the exhibition will feature powerful works of art that inspire an emotional response in the audience. As the masterpieces of the world-renowned legends of ukiyo-e come head to head under one roof, guests will be able to get their fill of this centuries-old form of artistic expression. Featuring some of the best-known and loved ukiyo-e pieces, the exhibition will explore the key themes of the five greats—bijin-ga (beautiful women) by Utamaro, Kabuki actors by Sharaku, landscapes by Hokusai and Hiroshige, and valiant warriors and witty caricatures by Kuniyoshi. This magnificent spectacle comprises areas dedicated to individual artists, each of which could function as a standalone exhibition.
