Nara Palace Site Museum Summer Exhibition for Children “In the Garden of the Nara Capital: Unearthing the Ancient Gaze at Nature”
The exhibit features the plants and flowers familiar to the inhabitants of the Heijo capital in the Nara period (710–794), brought to life from the pages of ancient literary works like the Man’yoshu anthology of poetry and found on artifacts like mokkan tablets unearthed in archaeological sites. The exhibits are aimed at families on summer vacation and information is provided in four languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean) to assist visitors from overseas. Tied to the “Exploring Art: Creatures of Faith” exhibition held at the Nara National Museum in summer 2019, this exhibit offers insights on how people of ancient times viewed nature and the environment as well as how the Nara-period natural landscape nurtured those views.
