Tokyo Opera Days 2024

The Tokyo Nikikai Opera Foundation will hold a variety of opera events inside and outside the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan over the next three years, starting in 2023, with a focus on opera performances at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan each fall. Embracing the catchphrase "Fall in Ueno is for Opera!", we've designed an array of events not only for a Japanese audience but also for guests from overseas. We warmly invite you to visit the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan this October.

Tokyo Nikikai Opera Theatre Presents:

In addition to the world premiere of Tokyo Nikikai Opera Theatre's "Die Frau ohne Schatten", an exhibition of opera costumes designed by internationally renowned Japanese fashion designers Kenzo Takada, Hanae Mori, and Junko Koshino will be displayed in the foyer of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. The highly acclaimed JIKUKAN EMAKI from last year also returns with a new production of "Carmen" created specifically for this event. Beyond the opera performances, visitors can fully enjoy the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, a masterpiece of Kunio Maekawa's architecture, with opportunities like backstage tours that highlight the venue's role as a cultural landmark for opera.

One of the most exciting directors on the global opera scene, Peter Konwitschny, finally brings his production to Japan with this world premiere. At 80 years old and a five-time Opernwelt "Director of the Year," he presents an electrifying opera that is not to be missed. Alejo Pérez, the music director of Opera Vlaanderen and a trusted collaborator of Konwitschny, will be conducting the event. Together, they bring you an unforgettable Tokyo-based production.
