Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) has been active since 2001 as an art center dedicated to the creation and promotion of contemporary artistic expression from Tokyo, supporting a wide range of artistic activities including interdisciplinary and experimental endeavors. Since its inception, TOKAS Hongo has served as a platform for artists to showcase their work through exhibitions, performances, and workshops. Together with TOKAS Residency in Sumida Ward, which serves as a base for artists-in-residence and research activities, it provides ongoing support for emerging creative talents through various programs. Since 2018, TOKAS has also collaborated with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to establish the Tokyo Contemporary Art Award, which supports mid-career artists.

Main works

Based in a historic and characterful building constructed in 1928, TOKAS Hongo offers programs that reflect the contemporary spirit and creativity. It hosts various exhibitions throughout the year, including "TOKAS-Emerging," which provides opportunities for artists under the age of 35 to present their work; the "TOKAS Creator-in-Residence Exhibition" and "TOKAS Project," which feature Japanese and international artists; "OPEN SITE," an open call program that brings together ambitious projects aimed at creating and presenting to society new forms of artistic expression in all genres; and "ACT (Artists Contemporary TOKAS)," which showcases noteworthy activities by contemporary artists.
