The Golden Hall of Chūson-ji Temple

Exhibition Poster

The "Special Exhibition Celebrating the 900th Anniversary of Its Construction: The Golden Hall of Chūson-ji Temple" is centered around the history, faith, and cultural treasures of Chūson-ji Temple. The display brings together 11 Buddhist statues enshrined in the center of the Golden Hall, all designated as National Treasures, and a dazzling array of decorative crafts, including the National Treasure “Flower Garland” ornament with Kalaviǹka that once adorned the Golden Hall. A full-size reproduction of the splendid Golden Hall, which has been the site of devout worship for 900 years, will also be presented using 8K technology. Don't miss this opportunity to witness the cultural heritage of Hiraizumi, which is also recognized as a World Heritage site. Along with the showcase of these precious cultural assets, a related thematic exhibition introducing the techniques used in the Golden Hall's decorations will also be held. Featuring hands-on activities, related videos, and training for tourism professionals, the exhibition aims to foster interest and understanding towards Hiraizumi, encouraging visitors to experience the site firsthand.

A wide range of materials are provided in order to promote intuitive understanding through experience and allow all visitors, including international tourists, children, and visually impaired individuals, to enjoy the exhibition. These include exhibit replicas, explanatory panels, worksheets in Japanese and English, tactile tools, and videos with Japanese and English subtitles. With explanations displayed in four languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean), and tactile tools available for visitors of other native languages, the exhibition aims to reach a wider and diverse audience.

All Eleven Buddhist Statues from the Central Altar On View in a Historic First

Three altars are inside the Golden Hall. Each one holds a coffin containing human remains. The coffin in the central altar houses the remains of Fujiwara no Kiyohira, the founder of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan and the local ruler who commissioned the hall’s construction. As such, the central altar is the most significant of the three. There are eleven Buddhist sculptures enshrined on top of it, each of which is a National Treasure, and all eleven will be on view in the gallery. This is a historic first, as the statues have never been exhibited outside the temple grounds. Adornments that once decorated the inside of the hall will also be on display.

Full-Scale Digital Recreation of the Golden Hall in Ultra-High-Definition 8K CG

The Golden Hall and its interior will be recreated at full scale in ultra-high-definition 8K on a large screen measuring 7 meters in width (approx. 23 feet). It will be as if the Golden Hall itself has come to Tokyo. Through these beautiful, powerful images, visitors will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the hall’s luminous golden atmosphere that has inspired prayer and devotion for 900 years.
