Design Museum Japan Exhibition
Japan has been developing distinctive cultural forms in everyday life for over 10,000 years since the Jomon Period. Still today, many designs with rich stories to tell remain unknown to the world at large.
Hand-in-hand with frontline Japanese creators, NHK is using its network of local broadcasting stations in 47 prefectures to discover examples of everyday culture in regions across Japan.
We call them all "design treasures”, and are introducing both the treasures and their background stories in exhibition and virtual contents. We hope that everyone who sees these projects will be stimulated to begin their own searches for the design treasures that exist all around them in the conviction that many delights and surprises will await them, too.
As part of the DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN project, several initiatives will be undertaken, including online tours connecting Japan House, where the exhibition is being held, with the regions of Japan, and communicating the attractions of Japan to the rest of the world, while providing a supplementary role to the exhibition. The designs featured so far will be recorded on the website and "design cards". In addition, an exhibition of design "boxes" and talk events are also planned. The various design-related efforts will lead to many people's interest in various areas of Japan.
