Established in 2019 by the renowned Hosoo textile company, the gallery is not just a space for art; it’s a narrative that intertwines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation.
The gallery’s architecture reflects this fusion. The building seamlessly blends minimalist modern design with nods to Kyoto’s historical aesthetics, creating an environment where tradition meets the future. From the intricate entrance details to the tranquil lounge areas, every element is a reminder of Kyoto’s dedication to preserving beauty while embracing change.
Inside, the exhibits go beyond mere displays. They delve into the philosophical questions of “What is beauty?” and “What does it mean to be human?” by exploring textiles as one of humanity's oldest mediums of artistic expression. Collaborating with experts from various fields, the gallery presents exhibitions that examine textiles from diverse perspectives, including in art, design, crafts, and science. For instance, until 16 March 2025, the gallery is showcasing Garden and Textile: The Shades of Shadows.
This multidisciplinary installation, created in collaboration with Rurihiko Hara and ALTEMY, explores the theme of kage (shadow) within Japanese gardens. Through a unique fusion of textiles, video, sound, and 3D scans of a traditional tsuboniwa (small garden), the exhibition invites visitors to experience the interplay between light, shadow, and the natural world. Among the highlights are textiles made using special foil threads developed through the collaborative research project Ambient Weaving, involving Hosoo, Yasuaki Kakehi Lab., The University of Tokyo, and ZOZO NEXT, Inc.
