The History and People of Wakayama Castle

Wakayama Castle / Depiction of a procession of the Kishu Tokugawa family

Wakayama Castle / Depiction of a procession of the Kishu Tokugawa family

Wakayama

Wakayama Castle was built in 1585 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598)—a powerful general and samurai of the Sengoku period (1467–1600)—to shore up control over the greater Kishu province (modern-day Wakayama Prefecture). Visit the castle and its grounds to see faithful re-enactments of a feudal lord procession and learn more about the Kishu Tokugawa family who ruled the Wakayama region during the Edo Period (1603–1867).
